The large Kuhn organ is the shining glory of the Philharmonie in Essen (Germany). It was inaugurated on September 24, 2004, a few months after the building opened. The symphonic instrument with 62 stops has a mechanical action and 4502 pipes. A second movable electric console is available on the stage.<\/p>\n

Anyone who first sees the Philharmonie in Essen often sees the building as “new and time-honored at the same time”. These were the words of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” who in June 2004 described the recently opened concert hall. This refers to the property: It is a successful synthesis of the historic building and the acoustically and aesthetically modern Philharmonic Hall. But what would a concert hall, no matter how beautiful it is, with its “excellent acoustics” be without the great artists? Here too, the Philharmonie has a tradition of more than 100 years. After all, it was none other than Richard Strauss who opened the Saalbau in 1904 and just two years later Gustav Mahler was on stage at the premiere of his own Sixth Symphony. Largely destroyed in World War II, the Saalbau was rebuilt in the early 1950s, preserving old features. After a thorough renovation of the monumental building and the complete refurbishment of the concert hall, the building was solemnly reopened on June 5, 2004.<\/p>\n
