The responsibilities are clearly defined. Lennert Knops will lead the organ manufacturing division, taking charge of sales and production of Noorlander organs. Matthijs Verhoeks will oversee the operational and business aspects of Sweelinq, the software branch specializing in sampling pipe organs. Marius van Horssen, who has been involved in Sweelinq’s development from the beginning, will serve as the technical head responsible for innovation and technical growth in both organ manufacturing and software development.

Founder Kees Noorlander will remain involved with the company as a shareholder and will support the new management team in an advisory role. He views this transition as an important opportunity for further professionalization and the expansion into new markets: “It’s wonderful to see these three passionate professionals continuing the future of Noorlander and Sweelinq. Organ builder Ide Boogaard and consultant Stef Tuinstra worked with the organ committee to create a three-manual organ with Hoofdwerk, Rugwerk, Bovenwerk (in a swell box) and Pedal. The existing pipes, Hoofdwerk chest and swell chests were recycled, while new chests were made for the Pedal and Rugwerk. The console came from another organ.

Some stops were made new, while others came from the organ maker’s stock. The front pipework was completely new, including Trumpets 16′ and 8′ for the Hoofdwerk. To compensate for the new reed stops for the manuals, the pedal reed stops were modified. The Hoofdwerk also received a new Cornet V descant.

Although originally based on the Bätz organ in The Hague, the sound was later revised because the voicing of the pipes was more in keeping with the Hinsz sound world, inspired by his organs in Kampen and Bolsward. For the Bovenwerk more romantic atmospheres were sought with the placement of strings and a swell box.

The well-known Urk organists Jaap Kramer, Minne Veldman and Jelle Jan Loosman will participate on this day. Of course, there will also be the opportunity to try out this sample set for yourself. You do not need to register for this day. There is also ample parking at the church.

In Alpe d’Huez, a village and ski resort in the Isère, stands a remarkable church called Notre-Dame des Neiges. The church, completed in 1970, was built to replace a small wooden chapel in the same location. The idea came about in preparation for the 1968 Olympics, and under the leadership of Father Jaap Reuten, who was a priest from 1964 to 1992, funding was made possible by donations from parishioners and other benefactors.

The architecture of the church is strikingly modern and symbolic. The roof follows the circular movement of a tent, suggesting that God pitched his tent on Alpe d’Huez, similar to the story of Abraham in the desert. The entrance to the church is at the back, through the choir, which is the heart of the building. After entering the church through a long entrance called the narthex, which acclimatizes you to the darkness and prepares you for meditation, you come to a shaft of light in the center of the building. This shaft acts as the mast that supports the tent and also serves as a central point around which attendees sit in a circle, similar to gathering around a campfire. In addition, the church’s central mast is aligned with two other bell towers in the congregation, emphasizing that religion connects people.

The church houses a unique organ called Christophe-Raphaël, built in 1978 by organ builder Detlef Kleuker to the design of composer and former titular organist Jean Guillou of Saint-Eustache in Paris. The organ stands in the center of the skylight, and is shaped like a hand reaching toward heaven. The fingers of this hand contain the pipes of the organ, which has 24 stops. Remarkably, the organ’s keyboards face the audience, allowing spectators to enjoy the organist’s playing in an unusual way.

During the winter and summer seasons, concerts are organized every Thursday evening in the church, initiated by the Notre-Dame des Neiges-Orgues et montagnes association (www.orguesetmontagnes.com). These concerts are participated in several times a year by renowned organists and orchestras from all over the world. There are also organ courses given in the summer by Jean-Paul Imbert and David Cassan.

Maarschalkerweerd & Zn has known different stylistic periods over the years. The Dutch period (1870-1885) was characterized by classical mechanical organs with modern elements of sound and wind supply. The French period (1885-1895) brought the introduction of an inverted free-standing console, swell box and Barker machine. Many details were consistent with the work of Cavaillé-Coll, such as French reeds and overblown flutes. In the German-French period (1895-1915), mechanical traction was replaced by pneumatics and membrane chest (Weigle system). The timbre remained French-oriented.

The organ in Dordrecht dates from the German-French period of Maarschalkerweerd & Zn. The timbre of Maarschalkerweerd is an important historical fact, grown from classical Dutch building principles. It developed according to an organ type that was given to him by his (indirect) “teacher”, the French organ maker Cavaillé-Coll, and Maarschalkerweerd’s organs are therefore a fine translation of Cavaillé-Coll’s work, without denying his own Dutch background.
